The Person In Your House

One of the most important people in any neighborhood is the individual Christian. Each believer is to be light and salt. We are called to be witnesses of the redeeming work of Jesus Christ and to engage personally in a ministry of reconciliation. However, if salt looses it's saltiness it is worthless. Light that is hid under a bushel basket does no one any good. Like watchmen on a wall, if our "witness" is not clear and compelling, then our words yield very little impact.

This first sermon is a call for self-examination. It's actually a call for confession and repentance. If Jesus is not transforming our lives, then our attempt to proclaim his transforming powers to others will be a mute point. We must be CREDIBLE witnesses in order to be effective witnesses.

Whining in the Wilderness

As we travel through those wilderness experiences, one of our biggest shortcomings is when we begin to complain. The Israelites in the wilderness were often corrected for their constant grumbling. When we grumble through the wilderness, it shows a lack of faith, a lack of knowledge, and a self-centered existence. In order to make it out of the wilderness unscathed, we must remember God’s past work in our lives and his presence with us even in the wilderness.

Wilderness Companions

As we travel through the wilderness, it is so easy to fall into immorality. There are very few times when we are more susceptible to falling into immorality than when we are struggling with the issues of life. Another reason why many fall in the wilderness is because they are isolated. As a church, are we truly close enough to others so we can protect each other when we travel through the wilderness?

When God Takes Too Long

In the wilderness, the temptation of idolatry arises. Idolatry does not mean to worship other gods. It means that we must guard ourselves against manipulating God or desiring to walk by sight and not by faith. The Israelites fell into this temptation when they built a golden calf and began to worship what they could see instead of what God had revealed. In the wilderness, we are tempted to follow after idols when it appears that God is taking too long.

Egypt in the Rearview Mirror

While the Israelites were in the wilderness, they struggled with many temptations on their trek to the Promised Land. Along the way, they even desired to go back to Egypt – the place of their slavery. In the midst of their struggles, Egypt seemed to appear better than their present circumstances. Paul warned us not to “crave evil things” as did the Israelites while in the wilderness. These evil things seek to take us back to a time that may seem less stressful, before the time when we were following God.

The Wilderness Guide

While we don’t like to think about it, God often purposely leads us into some difficult and uncertain situations. He does this for his own glory and our own good. As the Israelites embarked upon the mass exodus out of Egypt, they looked forward to the benefits of the Promised Land, but they were not aware of the challenges that awaited them along the journey. Just like the Israelites, God often takes us towards something greater, but to get there, we often have to travel through the wilderness.

"It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel apathetic." Many Christians don't want to think about the end of the world, they could careless honestly.
Checkup: Contagious Living

When was the last time you checked to see how spiritually healthy you are? During checkup, we are performing a spiritual inventory. This week, we want to help you work on your personal impact upon the world. Do you have a contagious lifestyle?

You can't experience an impact on the world without getting close to the people around you, because we'll never reach the world by keeping them at arm's length.

All There Relationally

This week is about relationships. Being all in has more to do with relationships than it does with behavior or codes of ethics. It has to do with investing ourselves relationally with those who need us. Family, Church Family, and the lost. The admonition of this passage should be applied in terms of our marriages, our larger family units, and our spiritual family as well. The admonition is to do more than just show up; it’s to be all in by being all there relationally.

All In Sacrificially

We know it as the parable of the Good Samaritan. The parable depicts the lives of the religious who refuse to get involved, who refuse to serve and give themselves to others. They are compared to one who gives his life away because of the need. Jesus says this is what loving one’s neighbor looks like. It is linked with loving God. Such love and service is what being “All In” looks like. Hopefully this service will inspire people to serve and give their life away.

This passage of scripture is often never addressed because of its content. It is often referred to as the parable of the shrewd steward or unrighteous steward. Although it can be difficult to interpret, it does tell us what Jesus expects from his followers financially. We must be all in or we are not in at all.

All In or Not at All

Luke 14:25-35 has Jesus revealing the cost of true discipleship or true Christianity. He clearly establishes that in order to follow him, in order to be one of his disciples, in order to be what we would call a Christian today, a person had to be more committed to him than anything else in life (including life itself). With Jesus you were either all in, or you weren’t in at all.

Disciplining and Discipling

In Eph. 6:1-4, Paul gives some clear instructions for children and parents. He reminds children that their submission to their parents is understood to be obedience to God. While Paul commands children to obey both their fathers and mothers, he specifically instructs fathers to take the lead within the home concerning a child’s disciplining and discipling. Paul informs fathers of their God-give responsibility to raise their children according to God’s principles.

Generational Hand-Me Downs

In Ps. 78:1-8, the psalmist informs parents to pass down instruction concerning the Lord to the coming generations. While the psalmist reminds the people of their constant faithlessness in light of God’s faithfulness, he pleads that the parents should teach their children the nation’s past mistakes in hope that they will not be repeated. Children do learn about God from instruction within the church, but their greatest chance of learning is within the home. Even if parents do not feel qualified, God has given them a responsibility to inform children concerning God’s work recorded in the Bible and God’s work within their own lives.

A Family's Choice

After Joshua had led Israel through military victories in order to regain the Promised Land, Joshua turns back like Moses to instruct the people one last time. At this juncture, he understands that he cannot speak for an entire nation, but he can speak for his family. Joshua decides that regardless of what his culture and his country does, he is going to lead his family to serve the Lord. In Josh. 24:14-18, Joshua makes his declaration for his house to follow God. Have you made that declaration?

Your Kids' Best Chance

At the cusp of entering the Promised Land, Moses gathered the people of Israel for one last list of instructions. Before reminding the people of the commands God had given them, Moses reminds the people that the most important thing they could do was to love God extremely. In Deut. 6:4-9, Moses tells the people to love God with all their heart, soul, and strength, but he then tells them to model and teach that love to their own children. From the beginning, God orchestrated family in such a way that a child’s best chance at following God is the model and instruction he or she
receives from his or her parents.

Rebellion from Grace

To help us understand the gospel, we will use the acrostic "GRACE:" God, Rebellion, Atonement, Conversion, and Eternity. The gospel begins with God, but we messed it up through Rebellion. Our sinful ways separate us from God, and there must be a way back to God.

The Messiah Tension

Throughout the Old Testament, the prophets were very specific in describing the coming Messiah. While Jews claim the Messiah has not yet arrived and Muslims claim Jesus was only a mere prophet, every person must deal with the fact that the person of Jesus fulfilled every single prophecy written about the Messiah hundreds of years before his birth. Through this week’s message, we will look at how Jesus clearly fulfilled the prophecies of the Messiah. and how the world as we know it as never been the same since.

The Muslim Salvation

In the 600s AD, a businessman named Muhammad emerged from meditating in a cave and claimed to have received a message from God. Over the years of his revelations, his theology would develop into claiming that his way was the original way from God and that Judaism and Christianity were not a way to God. In the message, we will spend a portion studying the life of Muhammad. From this angle, we will see how the message of Jesus’ grace and peace goes against the message of works espoused by Islam.

The Jewish Faith

God chose Abraham to be the father of his nation. Before the Law was ever mentioned, God declared Abraham righteous according to his faith. Unfortunately, Judaism has turned into a religion based on keeping God’s approval by doing good works, and they missed the coming Messiah in the person of Jesus. This week, we will look at the life of Abraham, especially the passages associated with God’s promises. Through this study, we will see the nature of God’s nation and his original plan for salvation through faith which has never changed since the beginning.

Our sin follows us home. Our sin hurts those that we love the most. Our families feel the consequences of our sin. So, what is following you home?

Godly Words for Personal Gain

To use and provoke the name of God, for our kingdom’s sake, is wrong. There have always been those who thought godliness was a means to great gain. Jesus taught us to pray, “hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, they will be done.”

Dialogue that Devours

Our words can hurt us, but our words can also hurt others. At times, our words can bring harm to both us and others at the same time. That reality is what Paul warns about in Gal. 5:15. If we are not Spirit led, our words and conversations can lead to an exchange of words that end up consuming all involved. Of course, the opposite of this speech is using our words to build one another up and for the edification of the body (Eph. 4:29).

If we don't address the needs now, who will rise up to meet the need?

The Unified Church

The church is not an organization, it is a body and like a body, all the parts need to work together. God very seldom says to just one person in the body what all the other people are suppose to know. God speaks to the body as a whole. If you want to know what God is saying to you, you might need to ask yourself what he is saying to the rest of the body.

There are so many people around us that need a relationship with God, and God is constantly opening doors for us. But unless we are intentional about walking through those doors God opens, we will miss out on adding to the Kingdom.

Changing Lives

God's still in the business of changing lives. On this Easter Sunday, we celebrate a risen Savior. And while you can resort to arguments concerning the reality of a risen Jesus, you can't argue with results. He is still changing lives. And he can still change yours.

The Rest of You

The greatest gift you will ever give the world is your intimacy with God. While we rush through a busy life, God is constantly knocking at the hearts of very religious people encouraging a relationship of intimacy with him.

The Rest of God

To experience the rest of God, you must set apart the Sabbath. Busyness consumes us. We work to get ahead and still feel like we are gasping for air. Does God’s rules on the Sabbath have something to say concerning our ragged state? In this message, we address what might be the most neglected commandment and learn how to maintain a healthy balance in our lives concerning our work and our rest.

The Rat Race

It's hard to do what's right when you have nothing left. It seems like we never have enough time, or are we just not being wise with the time we actually have? If an unbalanced life leads to an ungodly life, we must begin to make Jesus the one who is in control of how we spend our time.

The best offense is a great defense. When the troubles of life come our way, we are to be reminded that God is our light and salvation. With God on our side, whom can we fear?

Death Blues

There's nothing wrong with holding on. This week's sermon deals with the reality of death and how to handle the pain biblically. If you are holding onto God during the grieving process, you will find there's nothing wrong with holding on.

Circumstantial Blues

Surrendered Life

A surrendered life is a satisfied life. Throughout the Book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon recorded his futile efforts at becoming satisfied in the things of this world. At the end, he came to a conclusion that life was to only be focused on two things.

Foolish Friends

The people worth pleasing are the people who are pleasing to God. Many of us face real trouble trying to live for God because we surround ourselves with people who have a different goal. The quality of our lives would improve greatly based upon the people we let near us in life.

Inevitable Change

You can't move forward while holding on to the past. Everything changes. Even when we desire for things to stay just the way they are, it seems like our lives change more rapidly than ever before. Solomon realized that there was a season for everything, and that we must come to grips with the reality of change.

Never-Ending Work

Work is a means but never an end. In our second week of Satisfaction, we read how Solomon tried to find contentment in his work, but he never felt fulfilled. In a busy culture full of hectic lifestyles, we need to remember that work is a means but it was never intended to be an end.

Worldly Pleasure

Worldly pleasure only lasts for a season.

In this first week of our Satisfaction life focus, we look at the pursuit of worldly pleasure. As Solomon tried every worldly pleasure available, he found that nothing could provide him satisfaction since worldly pleasure only lasts for a season.
