The Image of God
September 23 – The Image of God
Read Genesis 1:26 and 2:7
“God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Does God have two eyes, a nose, and a mouth? Is that what it means to be created in the image of God?
God is spirit (John 4:24). He does not have a physical body. The image of God in which man is made cannot is not that we physically resemble God or He physically resembles us.
We are made in the image of God in that we have an innate capacity to have a relationship with God. We can know Him. That capacity is not activated until the Holy Spirit enters us at the moment of conversion. It is like the electrical wiring in a house – it is present but not effective until the power is turned on.
The Correct Attitude
Jesus provided the perfect example of the correct attitude about life. He knew that life came from God and that it was sacred. In all of His preaching and all of His acts, He confirmed how important life was. Every person He met, from the youngest child to the oldest adult, sick and well, God-possessed and demon-possessed, was important to Him.
He had the proper attitude about His own life as well. He resisted throwing His life away by submitting to Satan’s temptations in the wilderness, but willingly submitted His life to the will of the Father by going to the Cross. His life was uniquely important, but His recognition of its value should inspire us.
Life is given by God. We should honor its sanctity by refusing to waste it.
Read Philippians 2:1-11. How does that passage affirm the holiness of life?
